Jacob Ottolangui
1834 - 1894
London, England
JACOB OTTOLANGUI also known as JOHN LANGLEY  was born 19 November 1834 in Spitalfields, London, England and died 1894 in Fitzroy Sth, Melbourne, Australia. Son of MOSES OTTOLANGUI and EMMA BENSABAT.  He married FANNY SIMMONS 19 August 1857 in Holborn, London, England, daughter of ISAAC SIMMONS and RACHEL SOLOMON. She was born Abt. 1837 in London, England, and died 1917 in Melbourne, Australia.
Notes for JACOB (JOHN) OTTOLANGUI:
Arrived in Australia in 1864 on the Yorkshire, at about age 30, just two years before the arrival of his parents and younger siblings. He arrived with his wife Fanny, sons Maurice (Morris) (5 yrs), Issac (2 yrs) and George (1 yr).  They appeared to have travelled under the name Langley.  There was also a Joshua Langley (11 yrs) on board.  This could have been Jacob's younger brother - for whom there is no record of travel with his parents two years later but Joshua would have been 16, not 11 in 1864.  Known as "John Morris" (presumably Jacob Maurice), he lived at:
1860 - at 206 Bourke St East (Earthenware dealer), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
1863 - 208 Bourke St
1885 - 218 Bourke St

John Morris Langley's name at birth according to Bevis Marks Synagogue records was Jacob Maurice Ottolengui.

Jacob’s arrival in Melbourne in 1860 was not his first arrival date in Melbourne. I found his China shop in Melbourne was first listed in the directories in 1857, also all his children were born in Australia. I presume he travelled back to London to visit his parents and convince them to come to Australia.

Children of JACOB OTTOLANGUI and FANNY SIMMONS:

MAURICE OTTOLANGUI/LANGLEY
, born 1859, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; died 1933, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, Australia.

Article From Melbourne Newspaper:

PAWNBROKER KILLED, Shooting in city shop.
Brother detains Suspect.
Search for a second man.

Shot at close range by one of two men who entered his pawnshop in Elizabeth St, near Latrobe St, shortly before 2pm yesterday. Mr Maurice Langley aged 75 years, fell near the doorway and died within a few minutes. One of the men was chased by Mr Harry Langley aged 65 years, Mr Maurice Langley's brother, and captured. The second man was not seen by passers-by. Apparently he mingled with the crowd and escaped. The police are searching for him.

Discussing the shooting, Mr Harry Langley, who has been in ill health for sometime, said last night:- "We were having lunch in the dinning-room behind the shop- my brother, my wife, Mrs Carter who is a sister-in-law and I, when we heard someone in the shop. Maurice went to see who it was and was in the shop for about 4 minutes. We heard no conversation. Then there was a noise of a scuffle and a faint report of a shot. I ran into  the shop and saw my brother tottering. As he fell he pointed to one of two men and said I am shot. There were two men in the doorway of the shop- one a short man, the other a little taller. I sprang at the short man and he fell in the doorway, but before I could seize him he scrambled to his feet and ran along the street toward Latrobe St. I overtook him a few doors along and took him back to the shop, where he was held until a constable arrived. In the meantime the taller man had slipped away in the crowd. I think the two men came into the shop with the intention of holding my brother up and stealing money or jewellery. There was a considerable amount of money on the premises."

The chase and capture of the fugitive was witnessed by Mr Edward F Walker, of Compton St, Reservon, a driver for E A Walker, wholesale confectioner of Victoria St, City, as he was alighting from his motor-van to have lunch, at a cafe'. " I saw a short, shabbily dressed man being chased by an elderly thin man," Mr Walker said. "They had run only about 20 yards, when a man who was coming out of Cassells stood full in the short man's path. The man staggered from the impact, bumped against Cassells window and fell in the doorway of the shop. His persuer fell on top of him and almost without struggle siezed him by the shoulders. As the short man rose Mr Langley seized him and took him back to the pawnshop."

Mr Maurice Langley and his brother had occupied the pawnshop, which is owned by John Zevenboom and Co. brush manufacturers for more than 40 years. He was a bachelor, and frequently visited his weekend home at Selby, where his hobby was gardening.
