The Playhouse was founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, and revived in 1983 under the artistic leadership of Des McAnuff, who served as Artistic Director from 1983 to 1994. Under McAnuff's leadership, the Playhouse achieved international recognition as well as winning over 200 major awards, including the 1993 Tony Award as "Outstanding Regional Theater." | |
The Who's Tommy; Big River; Athol Fugard's Playland; How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; Lee Blessing's A Walk in the Woods; and most recently, the World Premiere production of Barry Manilow & Bruce Sussman's Harmony, are among the Playhouse projects that moved from the not-for-profit theater's home to productions across the United States and Europe. |
From North of La Jolla
Take Interstate 5 South to La Jolla Village Drive exit. At the end of the exit ramp is a traffic light. Make a right turn at that light onto La Jolla Village Drive, and stay on it for 4 traffic lights. The 4th light is Revelle College Drive of UCSD. Make a right turn onto Revelle College Drive and stay on it for 40 yards. La Jolla Playhouse's two theaters, the Mandell Weiss Theater and the Mandell Weiss Forum, are on the right. Parking is on the left. From South of La Jolla Take Interstate 5 North to La Jolla Village Drive exit. At the end of the exit ramp is a traffic light. Make a left turn at that light onto La Jolla Village Drive, and stay on it for 5 traffic lights. The 5th light is Revelle College Drive, the Revelle Entrance of UCSD.
