Ancestors of Annie Josephine Chapmon

Generation No. 1

        1.  Annie Josephine Chapmon, born September 28, 1898 in Sullivan Hollow, Simpson Co., MS; died February 27, 1975 in Columbia, Marion Co., MS.  She was the daughter of 2. Sam Allen Chapmon and 3. Maggie Garrett.  She married (1) Obed Collins King1,2,3 December 12, 1915 in Methodist Church, Columbia, MS4.  He was born January 28, 1883 in Columbia, MS?, and died January 06, 1964 in Columbia, MS?.  He was the son of James Washington King and Susana Eliza Bullock.  Annie and her father were known by family tradition to be Choctaw.  I have yet to find anything which would provide legal / tribal documentation of this, but we believe it to be true based on appearance of Annie, her father and her brother Woodrow, as well as general family knowledge.  A descendant of Sam’s sister has a photo of the sister in a garment with beaded fringe.

Generation No. 2

        2.  Sam Allen Chapmon, born Abt. October 1869 in Mississippi7; died Bet. 1932 - 1941 in Rankin Co., Mississippi8.  He was the son of 4. Lewis T. Chapman and 5. Laura Perry.  He married 3. Maggie Garrett August 01, 1889 in Westville, Simpson Co, MS9.

        3.  Maggie Garrett, born Abt. October 1870 in Mississippi10; died Abt. 1931 in Near Jackson, MS, brain cancer?11.  She was the daughter of 6. John Lofton Garrett and 7. Ann.

I do not have death dates or burial places for Sam or Maggie.  An attempt to order a death certificate for Sam yielded one for the wrong person, a Sam Houston Chapman of Union Church, MS, who died in Hinds County, MS.  I would be happy to share the info on this certificate with anyone interested.   I also do not have surname information for Maggie’s mom.  It is possible that John Lofton Garrett had been married before, and that Ann was Maggie’s stepmom, as she shows up in the 1880 census as only 14 years older than Maggie.

More About Sam Allen Chapmon:

Description: Short, compact build, black hair and dark complexion.  Dry sense of humor - hard to tell when he was joking.12

Miscellaneous: Toxey remembers him dying a couple of years after his (Sam's) wife, possibly early 1930's

Miscellaneous I: records may exist in Columbia, Jackson or Kokomo areas?13

Occupation: repaired clocks/watches13

Race/Ethnicity: Choctaw, I suspect it came from his mom's family.  Perrys show up on the earliest of the Choctaw treaties, but I have yet to connect the names.14

Religion: Methodist?

More About Maggie Garrett:

Education: 1880, Attended school within the past year, but cannot read or write, already working as "house laborer" – per 1880 Simpson Co. census.

Family business: family possibly of Garrett Snuff Co.?  I have been unable to find any proof of this, but it was a family story.  Also rumored to be related to Sherrif/outlaw Pat Garrett.  Possible, but unlikely and undocumented.  The Garrett Snuff Company was based in Delaware years ago, and efforts to contact descendants who might know of a connection have proved fruitless.  Since “our” Garretts had been in Mississippi for several generations before Maggie, the connection would probably be remote.

Children of Sam Chapmon and Maggie Garrett are:

                           i.    Leona Chapmon, born Abt. November 189515

ii.    Laura Chapmon, born Abt. 1896; died in Philadelphia, under mysterious circumstances., body not found; married or dated Fernando Digiacomo during a time when she was a dancer on Broadway (in the 1920’s?).  Fernando Digiacomo believed to be from Italy or Sicily and to have been one of Scarface Al Capone's Lieutenants.  Did he have another wife or family?

1               iii.    Annie Josephine Chapmon, born September 28, 1898 in Sullivan Hollow, Simpson Co., MS; died February 27, 1975 in Columbia, Marion Co., MS; married Obed Collins King December 12, 1915 in Methodist Church, Columbia, MS.

viii.    Lucille Chapmon, born March 26, 1904 in Simpson County, MS; died December 1977 in Gulfport, Harrison County, MS20; married Otto Williams.  I have been unable to find the correct SSDI information for Otto, but have Lucille’s SS-5 form, which was my confirming source for Sam and Maggie’s names.  Until that time, we did not have a middle name for Sam, and were unsure about Maggie’s first name (had thought it might be Josephine, which still might be her middle name), although we knew she was a Garrett.

33.  1880 Federal Census, Simpson Co, MS. lists Ann Garrett as widowed. Youngest child is 1 year old, indicating death could have been as late as 1880, but also there could have been more than one father to the children, so he could have died earlier or been an earlier divorce or unmarried relationship, given Ann's youth.

34.  1880 Federal Census, Simpson Co, MS, FHL transcription of film #1254664, If Ann was Maggie's mother, as stated in the 1880 census, then Ann must have been married around age 13 to have had a 10 year old daughter in the 1880 census where she is shown as 24 years old.  By that age she was a widow with 4 children, 2 of whom may have died young, as I have yet to locate them in a later census or other records.
