88mm PaK aug Gw III/IV Hornisse/Nashorn (Hornet/Rhinoceros), SdKfz 164

Hornisse/Nashorn (Hornet/Rhinoceros)

The Hornisse/Nashorn was another interim tank destroyer designed to deal with Russian armor. The Nashorn was very similar to the Hummel. Both used the same lengthened chassis of the PzKpfw IV with parts from the PzKpfw III. The engine was moved to the front and at the rear stood a spacious, open-topped fighting compartment. The main gun was the 88mm PaK 43/2, the same as the Jagdpanther's. The Nashorn had very hard hitting power but suffered from the common deficiencies of its predeccors: minimal protection for crews, a high silhouette and thin armor.
