Sd.Kfz.222 light armored car was a modified version of Sd.Kfz.221 designed to carry 20mm automatic cannon instead of a machine gun. Development of this new armored car was done by Eisenwerk Weserhuette AG in Bad Oeynhausen, while chassis was provided by Horchwerke of Auto-Union in Zwickau. Final assembly was done by F.Schichau of Elbing and MHN in Hannover-Linden. Production started in 1936 and till June of 1943, 989 were produced by Weserhuette, Schichau, MHN and Buessing-NAG. Early models (Ausf A 1936-1939) were powered by Horch 3.5l gasoline engine, while later models (Ausf B 1940-1943) by Horch 3.8l gasoline engine. Later models had also improved armor protection (up to 30mm) and were based on sPkw 1 Type V chassis with hydraulic brake system. Sd.Kfz.222 was eventually replaced by heavier Sd.Kfz.234 series but remained in service to the end of the war. In 1938, some 12 were sold to China along with 18 Sd.Kfz.221. Sd.Kfz.222 along with Sd.Kfz.223 were also sold to Bulgaria.
