Capital: Naval

Land area: 555.42 sq. km.

Location. Bounded on the north by Visayan Sea, on the east by Samar Sea, on the west by strait of Biliran and on the south by Carigara Bay.

Overview. Created as sub-province of Biliran by virtue of RA 2141 on April 8, 1959. It became a regular province after a majority "yes" votes during the plebiscite held on May 11, 1992.

The lovely island of Biliran teems with beautiful, white-sand beaches ideal for swimming, snorkeling, scuba-diving, wind-surfing and other watersports. Its natural coves offer untold adventures to the daring traveler. Its beaches are beachecomber's delight with an array of shells scattered on its shores.

Political subdivision. The capital town is Naval, also considered the island's commercial center. These are the towns comprising Biliran Province: Naval, Biliran, Cabucgayan, Caibiran, Culaba, Almeria, Kawayan and Maripipi.

Topography. The topography of Biliran is from slight flat to gently rolling and rough terrain. It has narrow coastal areas of lowlands with mountainous interiors except for the municipalities of Naval and Caibiran in the mainland of Biliran.

Major industries. Biliran thrives mainly on the fishing and seaport industry. Since most of its towns like Naval and Biliran are considered as excellent ports and are often the gateway to further destinations within the Visayas and even the Mindanao region

Language / dialect. The Bilirans speak a mixture of the Cebuano and Waray dialect.

Points of interest

Cabucgayan. An interesting site in Cabucgayan is "Busay Falls". It is a medium size waterfalls with a few hundred feet of water drop. It has two lagoons at it's base which are natural for swimmming.

Puro Island. Off the coast of Cabucgayan and within Carigara Bay is an islet called "Puro island". It is apparently private owned, but my brother got a chance to go there on one of his vacation. It's beaches is prestine white sand. The sorroung waters, however, are famous for hammer head sharks which yours trully had a personal experience while riding a motor boat many years ago.

Agta Beach. Located in Almeria. White sandy beach ideal for swimming and picnicking; offers a view of lovely Higatangan Island and other islets.

Maripipi Island. An island very rich in fish life; coral gardens; scenic waterways; popular source of ceramic material including white clay, ceramic school.

San Bernardo Swimming Pool. Located in Caibiran. A swimming pool whose source is very cool, natural spring; invigorating cool climate brought about by big shady trees and tropical plant surrounding the whole area; nearness to the sea and sandy beach.

Tumalistis Falls. Located in Caibiran, accessible in 20 minutes from the town proper by motorboat. Has unbelievably clear and sweet-tasting waters, fresh and green and virginal backdrop; soothing waters flowing gently to the sea; believed to be the clearest drinking water in the world that even ships come to this place for water supply.

Mainit Spring. Located in Caibiran. Equipped with three mini swimming pools; picnic tables and huts; bathtubs with water at boiling temperature. Ideal site for hot bath lovers since its water source come from the hotsprings nearby.

Biliran Volcano. Located in Caibiran. Highest peak provides a panoramic view of this spell-binding island and dazzling seas surrounding Biliran; offers a cool climate, inviting to the adventure lovers; ideal site for trekking; PNOC tests reveal immense geothermal power source.

Gigatangan Island. Located in Naval. Foremost as beachcomber's resort with its white coral beaches gleaming with shells of various colors and sizes; place where the former President Marcos took refuge during World Word II; Marcos Hill dominates the whole island. One can see Samar, Leyte, Cebu and Masbate from this hill.

How to get there. Biliran is accessible by bus or motorboat from Leyte mainland, it is nearer the northern side of Leyte and eastern side of Samar.

By air, Philippine Airlines operates daily flights from Manila to Tacloban, Leyte.
