Phantasmagoria:
A Puzzle of Flesh A
Review 6 Years After The Making
It was in 1996 when
game designer Lorelei Shannon released Phantasmagoria 2: A
Puzzle of Flesh through the game publisher Sierra
OnLine. The game was confusing to some, since Phantasmagoria:
A Puzzle Of Flesh did not include Adrienne, Don, Malcolm,
Carno, Curtis, or anyone else from the original Phantasmagoria.
Instead Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle Of Flesh played the
role of Curtis, a middle aged employee of a large company
called WynTech. Throughout the game, Curtis discovers
the truths about his past, about his mother, father and about
himself. The reality is shocking and very confusion, to the
point where Curtis starts to go mad, and delusional. Just
before Curtis is about to explode a very shocking truth is
revealed. Unbelievable to both the player and Curtis, the game
ends with a touchy moment... well kind of.
Of
course Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle Of Flesh wouldn't be
part of the series unless it featured horror, and murdering,
therefore, you can expect lots of guts on this one. The game
is based off sci-fi horror, unlike the original which was
based off or 70's horror. The acting in Phantasmagoria: A
Puzzle Of Flesh is a little more believable then the
original, and has one hell of a better visual. The sound
matches the games moods perfectly, and the game play has not
really changed since the original. The story is gripping and
scary, and the detailed gore will make even the strongest eyes
turn away. From one co-worker being gutted, stapled, and
knifed to body parts being eaten... this game is not for the
weak of heart.
One
other notice is the amount of sex involved with the game, so
much that there is an actual S&M bar in the game. This sex
just adds more to the twisted atmosphere of the game, and adds
the "what the heck is going on" mind set throughout
the game. Which is good, because it keeps you playing, wanting
to know what's next, and what's going on. You do not find out
all the answers till the end of the game which makes this game
one you have to beat.
Now
years after the game has been released, is the game still
worth playing? If you enjoyed the game years ago, then you
will enjoy it now. You will be surprised on how much you might
have missed the first time around. If you never played the
game before, I would recommend it to anyone who likes horror
and are tired of the same type of games out there. Phantasmagoria:
A Puzzle Of Flesh is a slow paced game, which gave it a
lot of bad reviews when it release. But not ever game has to
be action packed non-stop, matter affect, most of those types
of games are getting old and boring, you need a game like this
to even everything out.
