MEMORIES
I first encountered the Blitz crowd through a co-worker called Charles who I unfortunately do not have any pics of, he knew many of the early people there. Charles was almost asexual no-one really knew where his preferences lay but he was somehow a very snappy dresser I bought several outfits from
him and after that made my own as it was hard to find the right kind of clothes then without spending a fortune. Charles, myself and a guy called Michael worked in Drury lane, Covent garden just around the corner from The Blitz. Charles seemed to know Julia very well when she worked in PX.
The chronology is slightly off with the clubs ... Louises was earlier than Billys .. I used to trip over Sid Vicous in there all the time. I met Phillip Salon in there the first time ... lol he looked like he was having a fit on a floor full of broken glass ... and liking it .. I remember it as more of a punk club and pogoing all over Debbi Harry.
The Blitz was great, I was one of the aprroximately 50% straight males in there, no-one really cared about each others sexuality it was more a case of who was next? I was forever dragging myself off Steves lap but asking girls over to Balham for a coffee ( I still think some of them actually believed
me ) While the Blitz had the tag of being elite it also involved a lot of work, simply making the clothes took half the week.
It had many things going on at the time, like Jackie Charlton came along and interviewed myself and others and I had to fiegn illness to see it in those pre-video days. A big punch-up happened one time when Jock McDonald went off at someone .. I can honestly say that was the only violence I saw in any of those clubs, I wandered out to see what was going on and Julia said what would you do I just smiled and wondered if I should invite her back one time too.
I briefly chatted to David Bowie once in there ... he just appeared next to me and I uttered innanities while he did much the same in return, after all it wasn't like we knew each other. One thing that wasnt remembered in here was the 1980 Warren St New years bash ... it was the party of the decade to me ... everybody was there and not a sober face anywhere it was like we could change the world.
