The Girlfriend | |||||||||||||||
With breaking John Dillinger out the Lima, Ohio jail on October 12, 1933, Harry killed the Sheriff, Jess Sarber. There was no turning back then. Robbing the Auburn and Peru police stations and the Greencasltle bank of Indiana, the gang headed for Chicago to lay low. Known by now as the Terror Gang, they equipped themselves with all the luxuries their ill-gotten gains could give them and that included girlfriends. Pierpont had met Mary Kinder in 1924 through her brother, who was his crime partner at the time, Earl Northern. She had been around fifteen years. He never forgot her and she began to visit him and bring presents as she grew older. When he escaped prison, Mary by then had married and her husband was also serving time in the Michigan City prison. She promptly joined Pierpont and reaped in the profits of Harry's profession. In later years, she worked as a waitress and in factories. Mary had remarried and was a widow at the time of her death on May 21, 1981. She is buried at the Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis. |
