The Government of the Mi'kmaq of Eastern North America has existed as an institution since time immemorial. It consists of a K'jisaqamaw (grand chief) and seven district chiefs. (See also http://www.mikmaq.net/english/index.html under Government). Unamaki (Cape Breton) and Ktaqamkuk (Newfoundland) came under the jurisdiction of one district chief until 1860 when Ktaqamkuk came into its own as a seperate district under the cheiftanship of Muli's Olibia (Maurice Louis).
