Today, our minds are alive, our bodies are functioning, but our souls are dead because materialism has replaced mysticism. We think, and think intelligently - but we do not contemplate. We spend time, but we do not value it. We take advantage of our surroundings, but we do not respect them. As citizens of the contemporary world, we want only success and security - but we do not know what the words actually mean. That is why our souls are dead. Poetry can change all this because it forces us to reflect on the nature of life. It gives us new perspectives on old things. It highlights the extraordinary within the ordinary. It brings mysticism back into our existence - thus redeeming our souls and putting meaning back into our materialistic lives. Poetry, however, can accomplish all this only if it lives. And only YOU can save its life by lending a helping hand, and sharing with it some of the fruits of your success.
