POET OF THE MONTH Upon publication of each issue, Poesie India International selects a Poet of the Issue, whose poem appears in the space below. The PII Poet of the Issue for 2006-2007 is Mr. Jayanta Mahapatra, whose poem appears below: The Earth Still Smells of Spring Like an old sword in a museum, grief sits on in the dark, listening. Somewhere, a broken life snares itself like a light-eating star. The earth still smells of spring. Somewhere else, in an old photograph, an aged couple, long dead, stare ahead, a scene in a tragic play witnessed long ago. Somehow one wishes The road to grief would lead to a hundred others, which in turn would feed into a thousand other paths. But, they say, grief just keeps on looking for itself. Down to the depth of the net where its seven-headed being watches the world build its fun-house of mirrors. Will grief become a memory that would distrust its own memories? Its old hunger seems to be all it needs. It sits down and devours the large savoury dish in which we only go on thinking of ourselves. In this darkness I sit on, and among the sad, unending ricefields the burrow of this famished beast fills again with the swirls of spring. --- Jayanta Mahapatra If you would like to be the PII Poet of the Issue, just send us your poem along with a brief bio, and watch this space!
