A Part Of America Died.....
Author Unknown....
Somebody killed a policeman today,
And part of America died.
A piece of the country he swore to protect,
Will be buried at his side.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
With councel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
And spend long,lonely,nights.

Yes somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks the beat on dark lonely streets,
And he stands at each rookies side:
He answered the call...Of himself gave his all......
And Part Of America Died.............
According to the statement of Sheriff Al Hadaway,Sheriff Hadaway and Deputy Lea arrived at the home of a Mrs.Wood, after receiving information that her estranged husband,James P. Wood was there. They had a divorce paper they were attempting to serve on Mr.Wood.
Upon arriving Sheriff Hadaway noted that Mr.Wood's car was not at the residense.Deputy Lea walked up on the front porch, standing in front of the door.Sheriff Hadaway was to his right with his back to the wall of the home.
When the door opened,Mrs Wood was standing in the opening. Then a male voice said,"I'm going to kill you".
Before either Officer could react,a gun appeared from behind and on the side of Mrs.Wood.One shot was fired from the .38 caliber revolver striking Deputy Bill Lea in the chest.
Sheriff Hadaway then grabbed the gun, and wrestled with Mr.Wood for some time, before finally gaining control, and being able to handcuff him.

Mr.Wood was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Deputy Bill Lea............
