This is Sandy Ridge Cemetery. It is 11 miles south of Blytheville, on Highway 61, It is also the final resting place of Pauline and Joseph Pollard, my grandparents.
If you're not familiar with the area, it would be easy to drive past and not notice it. In the days of segregation, this was the burial place for "colored only." Over time, it became overgrown with grass and weeds and many unmarked graves were lost and forgotten.
According to my uncle, there is another cemetery not far from here (with the same name) which may have been for "whites only." He said that he'd research it more for me. It's so sad that people of different races could not coexist ~ even in death.
Today, there's not a sign to mark this special place, nor does it have any historical significance. What is important is that someone has finally taken the time to care for this sacred place of peace, solitude, and memories.
