A small farming community south of Chicago was the birthplace of William
B. Tabler, who spent many happy childhood hours helping his father run
the family lumber and grain business. After graduating with honors, he
went to Harvard where he studied architecture.
He had built his house —
a small shack, but livable — at age 10, and eventually designed more than
350 hotels in 20 countries. His first was a new Statler in Washington,
D.C., which won praise for its efficient design. He later served in World
War II in the Seabees, then set up business in New York, designing for
Statler and Hilton. Tabler believes success comes to those who accept challenges
with determination. "I never let anyone turn me down," he is fond of saying.
"I love a good challenge. If somebody says I can’t do something, that’s
the first thing I want to do."
