Some important information about Filtration,  Purification and Disinfection.

Filtration

Filtration is the removal of suspended solids from water, such as sediment, rust algae and protozoan cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidium. Filtration can be accomplished with cartridges in a housing, either cleanable surface
or disposable depth type, or backwashable media such as sand in a pressure vessel. Backwash control valves for this type of filter can be manual or automatic.Cartridge filtration has a lower initial capital cost but higher operational costs than a media type filter.

Purification

Purification is the removal of
dissolved substances from water, particularly organic compounds which affect water taste and odour. Activated carbon is a media that removes undesirable chemicals such as chlorine (and it's by- products), pesticides, and sulphur, but does not remove minerals for health such as calcium, magnesium, and fluorides. KDF is an alloy media used to remove low levels of undesirable heavy metals such as aluminium and lead.

Disinfection

Disinfection is used to kill pathogenic (harmful) bacteria in water, such as typhoid, cholera, salmonella, and campylobacter. E.Coli is the organism used to test for faecal contamination of water. Disinfection can be achieved with the use of oxidising chemicals such as chlorine, iodine, and ozone, or non-chemically with the use of ultra-violet light of a specific wavelength.
Conventional disinfection will not kill
giardia and cryptosporidium, which are not bacteria but protozoan cysts. Fine filtration of 1 micron is used to trap them in a filter.
