BROADCAST - Noise Made By People
Tommyboy
If Francis Lai had recorded a soundtrack to one
of those campy, 60's sci-fi films that imagined the late 20th century as
an era of bizarre robotics and gadgetry, chances are it would have sounded
a lot like Broadcast's long awaited first full-length album. They
merge cocktail jazz rhythms with a techno/industrial ambience, creating
a sound that is simultaneously retro and futuristic. Trish Keenan's
breezy vocals glide over the compelling, if not emotionally charged, music
with a light, detached delivery. (Imagine Astrud Gilberto backed by Walter
Wanderley, armed with a Moog and a Theremin- or in other words, backed
by Plone). The first single "Come On Let's Go" and "Papercuts" are
the standout tracks on this all around excellent collection. Fans
of the current over-emotive and histrionic style many women singers use
will probably not enjoy THE NOISE MADE BY PEOPLE. But if you dig the tradition
of cool, aloof Euro-pop (and bands like Saint Etienne, Komeda, et al.),
then Broadcast is definitely your bag, baby.
