THE VIGILANTE

The following is perhaps the most bizarre DWI arrest in the history of the United States. (At least, I assumed so until hearing and viewing TeeVee videos of similar recent occurances -- perhaps a growing trend?) Fact truly is stranger than fiction. It occurred in 1997, near Knoxville, Tennessee.

Frank Thompson was arrested for DWI late on a Saturday night. He was locked in the back seat of the police car. The police officer ordered that a tow truck take Frank's vehicle to the impound yard.

"The wrecker guy got back into his vehicle . . . and [the officer] was giving him a tow-in slip when this guy comes from the westbound side and takes the officer out. The guy intentionally hit the officer in our opinion," explained a deputy.

The tow truck driver assisted the injured officer, and called for an ambulance. The officer suffered a broken leg and internal injuries, and remained overnight in the hospital.

The citizen who was "too drunk to drive" gave police a description of the oncoming vehicle that crossed the road and smashed into the officer, and then left the scene without even slowing down. [News reports, court records, interview declined]
