SCREAMING BABIES...SCREAMING BABIES.... When I think of the 1980's Punk scene and the Punkettes in general, mohicans always seems to spring to mind! Maybe it was the vision of hordes of multicoloured fantails at a snow-swept Leeds 'Christmas on Earth' Punk festival, or the hairspray bottles discarded in the overflowing sinks of gigs. Or maybe it was Birmingham's Cedar rooms in the hazy light of a blacked out gig pit, when you crawled back through the dayglo crowd to the bar. Naahhh it has to be the sight of studded vixens walking up the staircase in Digbeth civic? Well who knows or who cares? What I do know is mohicans were everywhere! But Punkettes in the 80's wasn't just a cosmetic rejection like their late '77 big sisters craved for, it was also a defiant intensity, a battery of demands from granny punkettes to adolescent vamps! So here in this wing of NIHILISM ON THE PROWL! is a broad sweep of the 1980's era of dayglo Punkette fragments. From feminists to piss artists or terrorists to pacifists, none of whom sat on the fence! They are all in some way ultimately spikey and proud mothers, daughters, sisters, lovers, witches and bitches! Read on and weep or hopefully catch of glimpse of the spirit of the time, you may even discover something! If you just look up one of the bands or get a dusty tape from somewhere...I've done my job'! PETER DON'T CARE You can catch the 70's era on the Punk77 website which Mr Marco used and adapted from The Suffragette #7 fanzine first published in the summer of 1998. He's now expanded it to cover a load more info so go check it out. The 1990'S era of Women In Punk which featured in The Suffragette #10 fanzine will be posted as soon as this has filled up considerably. |
I'm missing quite a few punkettes from the World-wide scene and the UK scene. So any contributions or snippets of information will be much appreciated and acknowleged. Peter Don't Care Special thanx for UK contributions: Mike Clarke (YIA + Decadent Few), Sean McGee (Psycho Faction), Ian Glasper's 'Burning Britain' book, Joe Donnelly (Belfast), Jane & Sean (Anarka & Poppy). And original contributors from The Suffragette zine article...Mitch (4 Minute Warning), Colin Astro (Hell & Damnation), Hog & Martin Smith. |
