He Re-entered service in Company C, 27th Michigan Infantry on April 2nd, 1863 at Ypsilanti for 3 years. Mustered on April 10th, 1863. Promoted to Sergeant and then to 1st Sergeant.
He was discharged to accept promotion on May 20th, 1864. Commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company B, 2nd Michigan Infantry on April 1st, 1864. Mustered on May 23rd, 1864.
He was Commissioned Captain on June 6th, 1864.
He was wounded in Action on July 30th 1864 at the Battle of the Crater near Petersburg Virginia. He recovered and was Discharged on December 12th 1864.
John H. Bourns married Josephine G Jewell on the 7th of July 1873.
He died on the 31st of March 1902 and was laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery in Vassar, Tuscola Co. Mich.
