Before the war Michael H. Higgins was a stone cutter.
He enlisted in Co. "B" on the 7th of April 1862 at the age of 21. He enlisted in Port Huron.
He was 5'6". He had Blue Eyes, Dark Hair & Dark Comlexion.
He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer (See Document)remaining in Co. "B" on the 31st of December 1863.
Some records indicate he was WIA on July 11th 1863 at the battle of Jackson Miss. The report indicates he was a 1st Sgt. when injured. The Soldiers & Sailors site do not indicate any promotions and also his descendant cannot find any record of him being injured or promoted. He was always paid as a private. (See Pay Notes when available). He recovered(?).
He was Mustered Out on the 28th of July 1865 at Delaney House DC. with the rest of the Regiment.
"Higgins married Caroline Jex after the war. They are my GG- Grandparents. (RWB)"
Michael H. Higgins fell through a Dock and died of drowning. Many articles appear concerning the accident and I will have them linked soon.
He was laid to rest in the Lakeside Cemetery in Port Huron, Michigan. (NEW 03/09/05). Please note that his descendant as indicated that on the plot where he was supposedly l;aid to rest his the headstone of another man. He is unrelated to Michael H. Higgins.
I will be adding much more information here as it is being handed to me by his descendant.
