He came to Michigan in 1853, settling in Tuscola County.
He worked in the lumber woods, also on a farm he bought, and was in the employ of W. A. Heartt some three years.
He enlisted, as a Corporal, on August 8th 1861 at Monroe for 3 years in the 7th Mich. Inf. He was 22 years old when he enlisted. He was mustered on August 29th 1861.
He served twenty two months, when he was discharged on account of wounds received at the battle of Antietam. He was Discharged for disability at Baltimore, Maryland on March 18th 1863.
After remaining at home a year recovering from his wounds he re-enlisted as a 1st Sgt. in Company "B" of the 2nd Michigan Infantry. He was 44 years old when he reinlisted in Alma on the 21st of March 1864 . He indicated being a resident of St Johns.
He was Promoted to Regimental Sgt. Major (RSM) on 25 April 1865.
He was Mustered Out on the 28th of July 1865 at Delaney House, DC.
His rank when mustered out was that of first lieutenant.
Alexander Richards was for a number of years engaged in farming, selling agricultural implements, etc., and in 1883 operates a liquor store in the village of Caro.
He was married and had one daughter.
Belonged to Whiteside Post 143, G.A.R. Caro, Tuscola County.
He died in 1915 and was laid to rest in the Almer Cemetery, Tuscola County.
Could there have been a second soldier with the same name? The age does not seem to match as he aged 20 years in 1.
