He enlisted, at age 39, on May 10th 1861 in Battle Creek as the Captain of Company "C" 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
He was promoted Major on 26 July 1862 replacing Maj. Dillman.
He was wounded in Knoxville Tennessee on Nov.24th 1863. He died of his wounds on December 11th 1863.
