He moved to Battle Creek.
He was still residing in Battle Creek at the time of enlistemnet.
He was 23 years old when he enlisted, as a Sgt., in Company "C" of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry on the 25th of May 1861 in Battle Creek, Mich..
He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on the 22nd of September 1861 and tranfered from Company "C" to Compnay "A" two days later. (24th of February 1864)
He was promoted to 1st Lt. on 25 August 1862 as of Company "A".
He was transfered from Company "A" to Company "H" and promoted to Capt on the 24th of February 1863 of Company "H".
He was promoted to Acting Assistant Inspector General.
He was was eventually honorably discharged with the rank of Captain (Acting Asst. Inspector General 2nd Brig. 3rd Div. 9th Corp. (06/64 to 09/64)) on the 30th of September 1864.
His last Reported Residence was at Manistee.
He was laid to rest on Feb. 18, 1905 at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee, Mich.
There is a diary (Feb.-Oct., 1864) he kept while he was serving in the 2nd Michigan Infantry as captain and acting assistant inspector general. The brief entries tell of his duties and of the fighting in Virginia and before Petersburg.
