He was promoted to Corporal on the 25th of July 1861.
He Re-enlisted on the 25th of February 1861 (Actual 1864) at Detroit Mich. He was Mustered in on the 26th.
He was on duty with co. K Seventeenth Infantry from 30th of January 1864 to 9th of April 1864.
He was Severely Wounded at Wilderness Va. May 6th 1864.
Discharged for promotion to First Sergeant (?) on Oct. 16th 1864. Mustered Oct. 17 1864.
He was Commissioned First Lieutenant of Co. B on Sept. 24th 1864.
By 1865 he had become a member of the Color Party. While performing his duties with the Colors Party he had been wounded twice while carrying the flag.
On the night of March 25,1865 the Confederates succeeded in Capturing Fort Steadman. John Hardy, as a Color Corporal, is believe carrying the Colors, counterattacked. He gained the Nom de Guerre of "The Hero of Fort Steadman" for capturing Thirty-Five Rebels single handedly and assisting in the capture of three hundred more.
He was Brevetted Captain U.S. Volunteers on the 25th of March 1865 for conspicuous gallantry in attack on Fort Steadman. He was Commissioned Captain of Co. D on April 25th 1865. Mustered In on April 27th 1865.
He was Mustered out with the rest of teh Second at Delaney House D.C. on the 28th of July 1865.
