At the outbreak of the Civil War he was 18 years old and living in Lenawee Co. Mich. He enlisted in Company D, 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry on April 25th 1861.
He served as a Sgt in the Second and eventually transferred to the 3rd U.S. Artillery.
He served as Orderly in Coy K of the 3rd U.S. Artillery until April 25th 1864. He was discharged at Brandy Station Va.
After the war he moved to South Dakota.
He became a member of the GAR Kilpatrick Posts Post #. 4 Huron, Beadle Co and Sully Post #. 13 Pierre, Hughes Co., SD.
