Sylvester Keyser enlisted, as a Corp., on the 17th of April 1861 in Niles Michigan and indicated his home as being the same. He was 20 years old at teh time of his enlistment.
He was transfered at some point to Co. "E" 2nd Mich. Inf.
He was Promoted to Sgt.
Captain Charles B. Hayden, after he was wounded in Battle, descibes the actions of Sgt. Keyser "A second after he with eminent danger to himself sprang forward and caught me by the arms."
He was Promoted to 1st Sgt.
He was Promoted to 1st Lt. on the 7th of July 1864.
He was promoted to Capt on the 30th of September 1864.
He was Acting commissary of muster 1st Div. 9th Corp. from December 1864 to July 1865.
He was Promoted to Brevet Major on the 2nd April 1865.
He was discharged on the 29th of July 1865 in Philadelphia Pa.
