He was a businessman in Novi, Traverse City, and Bay City, Mich.

He enlisted on the 15th of May 1861 in Detroit as a Sargeant in Company "G" of the 2nd Michigan Infantry.

When he enlisted, at age 24, he indicated his home as being Constantine.

He was promoted to 1st Sgt. on 13 September 1862.

He was promoted to Command Sgt. on 25 February 1863.

He was promoted to Capt. on 06 October 1864.

He was promoted to Brevet Major (Regular Army) on 25 March 1865 (Conspicuous Gallantry in the assault on Ft Steadman) Petersburg, Va.)

He was promoted to Lt. Col. on 17 April 1865

He tells Colonel March of the 2nd Michigan Infantry's entry into the city and how he put the regiment's colors on the Custom House.

He was Mustered Out on the 28th of July 1865 at Delaney House in Washington DC.

He died in 1894 and was laid to rest in an (unknown name) cemetery in Bay City Mi.

...a variety of miscellaneous military documents including court martial records, a letter dated Dec. 22, 1861, a letter, March 19, 1865, from Frederick Schneider written after his parole from Confederate prison, and a letter, March 27, 1865, to Major C. A. Lounsberry describing the attack on Fort Stedman.
