Before the war his Occupation was Farmer.
He enlisted as a Private in Jackson as part of Company G of the 2nd Michigan Infantry on the 14th of February 1865. He gave his age as 19 but he was actually 16.
He was Mustered Out on the 28th of July 1865 at Delaney House District of Columbia with the rest of the Regiment at wars end.
He was honorably discharged at Detroit, Michigan on the 1st of August 1865.
He was united in marriage to Rachel F. Arnold January 3rd 1869 at Madison Center, Lenawee Co, Michigan.
To this union were born five children.

He died of Tuberculosis of the Lungs on the 27th of December 1913 in Fairfield, Lenawee Co, Michigan. His burial was on the 30th of December 1913. His final resting place is Ridge Cemetery, Ridgeville, Lenawee Co, Michigan.

He served in the Civil War, in Company G, 2nd Michigan Infantry, according to the books, "Michigan Soldiers and Sailors," Volume 2, Page 84
His Civil War pension file tells that he enrolled as a private on 14 Jan 1865 in Co. G of the 2d Regiment of Mich. Inft, commanded by Capt. George Cook and was honorably discharged at Detroit, Mich. on 1 Aug 1865. His personal description is as follows: Age 42, height 5'11," complexion light, hair light, eyes blue. While a memher of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of duty in front of Petersburgh, VA, in March 1865, he contracted a heavy cold while standing on picket in a cold drenching rain storm. The cold settled in his throat and lungs and catarrh and rheumatism that he was discharged with a cough and stiffened joints from which he has never recovered. He was treated in hospital at division head quarters from there transferred to gen. hospital at Petersburgh, VA.
In an affidavit dated 23 Mar 1905, he tells he was born October the 24 1847, Jackson Co, Mich. Waterloo twp...height 5 ft 10 1/2 inches, weight 210 lb. eyes blue, hair light, complexion light, permanent scars one, on the back of left hand. In an affidavit dated 26 Oct 1899, he gave the same birth information "according to Bible record".
Newspaper Article "H. E. HATT DIED THIS MORNING, Resident of Fairfield For Past 45 Years Expired At Seven This Morning. [Special to the Times] Fairfield, Dec. 27--H. E. Hatt, a resident of this vicinity for the past forty-five years passed away at seven o'clock this morning at the age of sixty-six years. Mr. Hatt underwent an operation last spring when an eye was removed and he has been in failing health ever since. Tuburculosis was given as the cause of death. He leaves to mourn his demise three sons and one daughter, H. B. Hatt of Ridgeville, A. L. Hatt of Ridgeville, A. E. Hatt of Adrian and Mrs. Detwiler of Ridgeville. The funeral will be held at two o'clock sun time, Tuesday afternoon at the Ridge church, and the remains will be interred in the Ridge cemetery."

Obituary "OBITUARY, Henry E. Hatt Henry E. Hatt was born in Washtenaw county, Michigan, Oct. 24, 1847, and died Dec. 27, 1913, aged 66 years, 2 months and 3 days. He was united in marriage to Rachel F. Arnold Jan. 3, 1869. they resided in Washtenaw county one year, then moved to Fairfield township where they have since resided. To this union were born five children--Henry B., Arthur L., Adelbert E., and Mrs. Iva Detwiler, one daughter Arwilda H., dying in infancy. Besides the loving wife and children, there are left to mourn his loss, five grandchildren. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters--Merwin, Ernest, and Eli N. Hatt; Mrs. Hulda Ann Tate, Mrs. Jemima Jackson, Mrs. Loretta Doan (sic) and Mrs. Esther Stoddle (sic), all residing in the state of Michigan. The deceased was a member of the Jasper I.O.O.F. and Rebekah lodges, the Adrian camp, also the G.A.R. he having eenlisted in the 2nd Michigan infantry, at the age of 16 years. His was a very friendly nature and he will be greatly missed in the community where he has resided for so many yhears, and in the lodge room where he was a faithful member. But where he will be missed most is in the home circle, especially by the faithful wife, whose companion he has been for nearly 45 years. The funeral was held at the Ridge church Tuesday at 11 o'clock sun time."

Misc. Notes Daughter of Barzilla W. Arnold, who married on 30 June 1825 in Ontario Co, NY, Hannah Havens. Barzilla was a son of John Arnold (1779-1876) and Rachel Southward (d. 1807), who were married in 1802 in New Jersey.
OBITUARY, Mrs. Rachel Hatt
“Rachel F. Arnold, youngest daughter of Barzilla and Hannah Arnold, was
born in Fairfield township Nov. 23, 1845, and departed this life March
20, 1921, aged 75 years. She was united in marriage to Henry E. Hatt Jan. 3, 1869, who passed away Dec. 27, 19013. To this union was born five children, one daughter dying in infancy. Those surviving are--Henry B. and Arthur L. of Jasper, Adelbert E. of Adrian and Mrs. Iva Detwiler of Ridgeway. There are also 10 grandchildren. She was the youngest of a family of seven children, all of whom have preceded her in death. She was a resident of Fairfield practically all her life, except one year of her early married life which was spent in Washtenaw county. Since the spring of 1920 she had made her home with her daughter in Ridgeway, where she was tenderly cared for, until the end came. She united with the Methodist church at Ridgeville 25 years ago, and was a loyal member. Of a quiet, unassuming nature, she was a loving wife and mother, a true friend and neighbor, one who will be missed in the community where she lived for so many years.”
