On June 18th 1864 the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry fought in the battle of Petersburg. Color Corporal Rowe was put in charge of carrying the Colors in place of Color Sergeant Gunlack which had been wounded already. He was shot through the head and died immediately.
Lt. Frederick Schneider volunteered to rescue the Colors. He carried both the Colors and a wounded soldier he found near Color Corporal Rowe.
By the end of the day the entire Color Party had been killed or wounded.
He was laid to rest in the the Petersburg National Cemetery in Va. Grave #1753 (NEW 03/12/05)
