William P. Morgan was born on 17 April 1846 in Oakland County Michigan, the son of William Morgan and Margaret Morgan nee Wright.
At the age of 19 William enlisted in Company H of the 2nd Michigan Infantry at Jackson Michigan. William was a substitute for Phillip Davey Weston.
While serving on active duty at Fort Steadman he was taken as a Prisoner of War at Petersburg Virginia and held at Libby Prison. He remained there for five days until the surrender of General Lee and the end of the Civil War.
He was mustered out of the army on 31 May 1865 at Detroit Michigan. His rank was of Private.
After being mustered out he returned to Michigan and was married to Mary E Huitt nee Spalulding. He and Mary had eight children and lived in the Jackson and Calhoun County area and in Greene County Iowa.
After the death of Mary he was married two more times and died on 09 January 1926 at Albion Michigan and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery there.
