He was Discharged on the 24th of June 1861 from the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry to accept a position in the US Regulars.
He was promoted to Capt. on 14 May 1861 of the 11th U.S. Regular Infantry. He left on June 27th 1861 for his new unit.
Like many men that joined the Volunteers he went to a Regular Regiment. It seemed like positions in the Regulars and Artillery were always seeked by the Volunteers.
He was promoted to Brevet Major on the 3rd of May 1863 for gallant and meritorious services in the battle of Chancellorsville Va..
He was promoted to Brevet Lt Col on 02 July 1863 for gallant and meritorious services in the battle of Gettysburg Pa.
He was promoted to Colonel on 15 April 1864 of the 1st Mich. Colored Infantry. (102nd USCT)
He was promoted to Brevet Brig-Gen of Volunteers on the 13th of March 1865. for gallant and meritorious services during the war.
He was discharged on 30 September 1865 Charleston SC.
He remained a soldier after the war. He served with the 11th US Infantry until he was transfered on the 21st of September 1866 to the 29th US Infantry.
He was transfered on the 25th of April 1869 to the 11th US Infantry.
He was promoted to Major on the 29th of October 1873 of the 3rd US Infantry.
He was promoted to LCol on the 19th of May 1881 of the 7th US Infantry.
He Retired on the 1st of February 1887.
He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit, Michigan.
