He enlisted at age 25 as 3rd Sgt in the Kalamazoo Light Guard, a peace time malitia, which became Coy "I" of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He was residing in Hamilton, Mich.
He served as 3rd Sgt, 2nd Lt and 1st Lt of Coy "I". Adjutant of the Regiment, Captain of Coy "E" and Lcol of the Regiment. A lot of his spare time was spent on Court Martial and other tasking.
He participated at the battles of First and Second Bull Run, the Peninsular campaign of 1862; Fredericksburg, Kentucky and Tennessee, 1863; and the battle of Jackson, Miss.
He was wounded in the shoulder at the battle of Jackson Miss. on July 11th 1863. He was sent to the field hospital then the Cincinnati Marine hospital where he recovered from his injury.
LCol C.B. Hayden was hospitalized and died of Cerebro Spinal Congestion (a type of Pneumonia) on March 14 1864. He was returned to Michigan for burial.
He was laid to rest in the Hamilton Township Cemetery in Van Buren Co., Mi (NEW 03/12/05)
