A man and lady had wanted a child for a long time. Finally the day came when the adoption agency called and told Judy that they had a boy she and Tom might be interested in. Tom took off work and he and Judy hurriedly went to town to the adoption agency.
The agency told them that they had a shy, cripple boy who was three years old that they weren’t able to place; and would they be interested in seeing the boy? The woman left Tom and Judy alone to talk it over. Judy said that she wanted a baby to cuddle and love. Tom said he always wanted a boy. So Tom and Judy called Mrs. Jones back into the room and told her they wanted to see the boy. Mrs. Jones called Timmy and he came hesitantly into the room, a shy, three year old boy with a limp. Tom and Judy took Timmy home with them that night.
The waiting time to decide if the couple wanted to adopt a child is one year before it becomes legal. Timmy crept quietly around the house day after day until the father came home. Then, he would be a little more at ease.
One day Timmy was outside just sitting quietly, when a dog, dirty and hungry came up to him. He got a tub and bathed the dog and took him into the house to inquire if he could keep the dog. Judy and Tom talked it over and decided to let Timmy keep Shaggy. Each day, Timmy and Shaggy romped and played from morning till night.
One day Judy and Tom were talking about their adopted son. Judy said that since Timmy had gotten Shaggy, Timmy hardly limped any more. Now it was time to finalize the adopting and Judy and Tom went to sign the final papers. They asked Mrs. Jones if they needed to sign for Shaggy, too? Mrs. Jones didn’t seem to appreciate Judy’s sense of humor. Tom and Judy went home with a happy Timmy and a happy shaggy!
