A little girl named Sue lived in a big house with her mother and father on a street where there were no children for Sue to play with. Sue was very lonely, she often got into mischief.
One day Sue walked past a kennel where pets were kept. A solid black cat caught her eye. She stood and looked at the black cat for a long time wanting to pet the cat. Sue went home and asked her mother and father if she could have a cat. Her mother said, "No, cats are too messy and smell up the house."
Every day Sue went to the kennel. As always, the black cat was there. She longed to stroke the beautiful, black fur. One day, when Sue went to the kennel, she overheard the man who kept the kennel say, "Mrs. Perkins died a week ago and I can't afford to keep her cat any longer. I'm going to have to put the black cat to sleep."
Sue, hearing this, ran home. She exclaimed, "Mother, Mother, they are going to put my black cat to sleep because Mrs. Perkins died and the man at the kennel can't afford to keep him any longer!
When Sue's father came home, her mother and father had a long, serious talk. Then Mother called Sue and said, "Your father and I decided to let you get your black cat, that you have become so fond of; but you must take care of it yourself."
"I will, I will," Sue cried, "and please hurry before they put Blackie to sleep! Now Sue doesn't get into mischief anymore as she did because she has Blackie to love and play with!
