A family lived outside of town. There was a father, a mother, a son and a grandfather. Times were hard and the father went into town to work to help make ends meet. The grandfather, who had always insisted on doing all the plowing, continued to plow with a horse and old-time plow.
People were always dropping off cats and dogs, as they weren’t able to feed them. There was a family of cats and several dogs. The father came home from work one day and told them that they would have to call the animal shelter to come and get some of the cats and dogs the next day.
An old, almost feeble dog had come to live with the family. He always went to the field with the grandfather. He followed the plow day after day. The day the animal shelter was to come after some of the animals, the grandfather fell to the ground. The old dog, not being able to revive the old man, went to the house and got the mother and brought her to the field with his insistent barking.
The son was in school and the mother didn’t know what to do; so she went back to the house with the old dog. She wrote a note and tied it to the old dog’s collar and told him to go fetch a doctor, pointing him across the fields.
The old dog, with amazing speed, took off across the field as the mother went back to the grandfather. Soon, across the field, came a doctor on horseback and the good old faithful dog was with him.
The mother and doctor got the old man into the house. He had suffered a light heart attack. The animal shelter came and got some of the animals; but you can bet, the old dog will have a home the rest of his days!
