At the edge of the forest lived a family, a father, a mother, a little boy and a little girl. The girl’s name was Susan and the boy’s name was James. Susan was shy. James was the mischievous and venturous type of boy.
One day James and Susan went walking in the forest. They saw a fawn that was limping. James usually was the first to venture near most any animal; but this time, he was hesitant. Shy Susan walked slowly to the fawn so she wouldn’t frighten him. The fawn, not being able to run, as he may have, if he wasn’t injured, let Susan get nearer and nearer. Soon Susan was near enough to see about his injured leg.
James came closer, too, and saw that the fawn needed doctoring. He rushed home and got ointment and bandages to wrap the fawn’s leg while Susan stayed with the fawn, talking gently to it. When James got back, they doctored and bandaged his leg.
Every day Susan and James went to see their fawn. They named him, Rudolph. Each day, the fawn was better and stronger. He grew and grew. Soon Rudolph had no limp at all. Susan and James frolicked and played with him.
One day, as Susan and James went to see Rudolph, he was not alone. He had a playmate. He paid Susan and James little attention. They went home and told their mother and father all about their finding Rudolph and nursing him back to health. Now, he has another playmate and won’t pay as much attention to them as he once did. Father explained to them that Rudolph was growing up and would be having a family all his own. Soon there were twin fawns for Susan and James to play with. They were very happy, as there were no children for them to play with.
