HERSHELL AND BANDIT

A boy named Hershell always passed an old house on his way to and from school.  A dog who lived there, always barked at Hershell; so he would hurry past the house where the dog always barked at him.  One day, Hershell made up his mind not to be afraid of the dog.  So, when the dog barked at him this time, he slowed down on his way home from school and talked to the dog.  The dog stopped barking and began to wag his tail.  Then Hershell went home happy that he didn’t have to be afraid of the dog anymore.

Each evening, Hershell stopped and talked to the dog.  One day an old man came out of the house to talk to Hershell.  He said, “I see you have made friends with Bandit.”  Hershell said that he used to be afraid of the dog; but now he wasn’t.  He asked the old man where he got the name “Bandit” for his dog.  The old man told Hershell he found Bandit stealing food out of the trashcans and the black patch over his eyes looked like a mask, so he named him “Bandit.”

Hershell continued to stop and talk to Bandit and the old man after school each day.  One day the old man asked Hershell if something happened to him, would he take care of his beloved Bandit as he had no family to take care of him when he was gone.  Hershell went home and asked his mother and daddy if he could have the dog, Bandit, if something happened to the old man.  His folks said that he could have Bandit if there was no one else to take him.  Hershell continued to stop and talk to Bandit and the old man after school.  He was becoming better and better friends each and every day.

One day Hershell came home from school when he saw an ambulance that took the old man to the hospital.  He reminded Hershell of his promise to take care of Bandit if something happened to him.  Hershell told his parents that they had taken the old man to the hospital and asked to go see the old man.  They said that he could; and so, the next day, after school, he rushed to the old man’s house and got Bandit and took him to the hospital.  He told Bandit to sit and he went in to see the old man.

The nurse had to lift the old man up to let him see Bandit outside of the window.  The old man was happy as now he could close his eyes as Hershell left with Bandit after thanking Hershell for bringing his dog to see him.

The next day, Hershell and Bandit went to the hospital to see the old man.  The nurse told him gently that the old man had passed away just as Hershell and Bandit left the evening before.  Hershell put his arms around Bandit for comfort and somehow he knew that Bandit knew the old man had gone to his rest!
