THE LADY AND THE PARROT
There was an old lady who lived by the railroad tracks. She had cats, dogs, chickens and a parrot that talked. Grownups told their children to never go near the old lady’s shack because she was mean, because she shouted at people as they passed by.
One
day a little boy’s dog went to the old lady’s shack. The little boy called and coached his dog to come back as he was
afraid to go near the old ‘lady’s shack.
He could hear someone say, “Kill that mutt, kill that mutt!” The little boy loved his dog; but he was
frightened as he went closer and closer to the old lady’s shack.
He
peeped around the corner ever so cautiously.
To his surprise, there sat the old lady petting his dog. “Is this your dog,” the old lady asked? “Y-Y-Yes,” stuttered the little boy. Once again he heard those words, “Kill the
mutt, kill the mutt!” He looked up and
saw that it was her parrot talking! The
old lay explained that she was lonely and needed someone to talk to. A sailor had given her the parrot in
exchange for food that she had given to him.
The
little boy and his dog went home and he told his family about the lonely old
lady and her parrot by the railroad tracks.
Now she has children playing and listening to her tell stories from far
and near.
