RENE’ & MITTENS
Rene’ was an only child, she played alone day after day. Nonetheless, she had her chores to do. One was to take the ashes from the fireplace and empty them.
One day, Rene’ went down to dump the ashes and she heard three sneezes; but she could see nothing. Finally, she felt some soft fur rub her legs. She picked up the ball of black fur and put it in the tub where her Mother had been washing clothes and bathed it in the nice, warm suds. Out of the suds came a clean, bathed, beautiful black kitten with white feet that looked like gloves or booties.
Rene’ took the kitten into the house and asked her parents if she could keep the black kitten. They said that she could if she would take care of it.
Rene’ wondered and wondered what to name her new kitten. She could name him “soot” as he came out of the ashes. But she threw that one out as she tried to come up with a perfect name for her cat. Mittens is the perfect name for her cat, as it looks like she is wearing mittens, Rene’ thought.
Mittens and Rene’ played and played. She no longer was lonely as she now had a playmate. Sometime she and Mittens played with a ball of twine. Other times, they played ball with Rene’ soft ball and sometimes, Rene’ just sat and stroked Mitten’s beautiful black fur. Sometimes, she would dress Mittens in her dolly’s clothes, which was fine until she started to tie the bonnet strings under Mittens chin. Then Mittens would wiggle and wiggle until she got down and ran away.
One day Rene’ dressed Mittens in her doll clothes, and sure enough everything was fine until she started to tie the bonnet strings. Then Mittens jumped down and ran away again. Rene’ looked and looked everywhere for Mittens. She couldn’t find her for a while.
Mittens was up in the tree where she hid from René’ and wouldn’t come down when she called and called. When she finally came down, Rene’ promised never to put a bonnet on Mittens again. So Mittens never had to wear that bonnet again!
