SKIPPY

A father, a mother and a little boy named Timmy lived on the outskirts of town with a dog named Skippy. Timmy and Skippy romped and played after school every day. They were very good pals.

One day the father came home from work very sad. He called Timmy and his mother in for a talk. His job was taking him to another town. The family was sad to leave their friends and the people they went to church with; but they loaded up all their belongings and bid all their friends good-bye.

The trip was long and hot and soon they stopped for something to eat. They all went into a restaurant. Timmy hurried out to feed Skippy. “Skippy, Skippy, where are you?” No Skippy! They asked all over town, “Have you seen a black and brown, shaggy dog?” No one had seen a shaggy dog. They looked and looked until father said, “We will have to go on to our new home. I have to be at work early in the morning.” Timmy cried and cried. Each weekend, they went back looking for Skippy. No Skippy was to be found. Timmy was so sad he didn’t play any more. The father offered to get him another dog; but he said, “No!” He wanted Skippy!

One day an old man came by with a straggly, dirty, hungry dog at his heels. The old man was trying to shoo the dog away. He said, “I fed him and he has followed me ever since.” Timmy didn’t pay much attention to the dog. He wouldn’t have recognized him as Skippy because he looked like Droopy. However, Skippy recognized Timmy, as dogs never forget their masters!

When Timmy realized the dirty, hungry dog was his Skippy, he was so happy. He fed the old man and Skippy and bathed Skippy and took him into the house hollering, “Mother, Mother, I’ve found Skippy!” When the father came home, he was as happy as Timmy and his mother. He told Timmy it would take a lot of love and care to get Skippy back to his old self. “Oh, I’ll take good care of Skippy!” Timmy said happily.
