Lucy Maud Montgomery, was born at Clifton, Prince Edward Island, on
November 30, 1874. Montgomery had a lonely childhood. Her mother
died when she was two. Her father remarried and after several years she
was sent to live with her very strict, religious grandparents.Montgomery
attended the Prince of Wales College, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward
Island in 1894 where she earned her teacher's license. Between 1895-96
she attended Dalhousie College, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Montgomery always
knew she wanted to be a writer. She had various poems and stories published
as a young woman. Then she completed her second-class teacher's certificate
in 1894, and her first-class license in 1895. She took up her first teaching job
in Bideford, Prince Edward Island in 1894. She achieved much in her lifetime,
putting Prince Edward Island and Canada on the world map. A writer, she
published some 500 short stories and poems and twenty novels. Nineteen of
the novels were set on Prince Edward Island. Today, Montgomery's novels,
journals, letters, short stories, and poems are read and studied by general
readers and scholars from around the world. A musical based on Montgomery's
first best-seller, Anne of Green Gables, has drawn packed houses for over
twenty-five years. Maud died in Toronto on April 24, 1942 and was buried
at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.
