Charlie's Leading Ladies

Brigitte Lin

(Lin Ching Hsia, Lin Qingxia)

Brigitte Lin, what can I say?   She is the major reason I fell in love with those TW 70s romance movies at the first place.  She has been charming me for about 15 years.  It is not her beauty that impresses me the most, it is her self-confidence and her rare spiritual qualities.  Even long before I watched her movies, I was so impressed by her when I first saw her pictures on Popular Cinema.  She's all that!  She is my ultimate favorite among all, well, I guess you can tell it just by reading my movie reviews.

Brigitte&Charlie is absolutely my top favorite screen couple in TW 70s romance movies.    The sparks and the chemistry, the style and the spirit that Brigitte&Charlie shared just carried me away every time when I saw them together.  I am totally in awe of this pair.  Click on the link of Brigitte&Charlie to see my tribute to this pair.

B&C made 20 movies together, including three that they weren't paired up as a couple.

Joan Lin

(Lin Fong Chiao, Lin Fengjiao)

Joan Lin, another big star in the famous "Two Lins, Two Chins" phenomena.  Although she played many vivacious type of girls, she mostly impressed me as a gentle, sweet, easy-going girl-next-door, with all the virtues that a traditional Chinese lady is supposed to have.  Even when I was a big Brigitte's fan as a teenage girl, I've always thought Joan had everything that most men would have required for a wife.  She is kind, caring, decent with inner strength.  Brigitte is always like that angel from other world, but Joan is more down-to-earth and approachable.  She is that type we often say, "a great woman behind a great man".

On screen, B&C is my ultimate favorite screen couple.  However, I've always thought that in the real life, Charlie need someone like Joan (with Joan's personality and character), who can keep him grounded, support and encourage him all the time.   Joan&Charlie made 12 movies together including one that they weren't love interest.

Chen Chen     (Zhen Zhen)

Before the era of "Two Lins, Two Chins", Chen Chen was the most popular actress in TW romance movies.  She and Alan Tang (Deng Guang Rong) were the golden couple on the screen until 1975/1976 when two Lins & two Chins took over.

Chen Chen made 9 movies with Charlie.  They looked nice in "Wo Xin Shen Chu" (literal, Deep in My Heart).  These two are also nice in Yi Lian You Meng(Fantasies Behind the Pearly Curtain), Xin You Xian Xian Jie (Heart with a Million Knots).   She is sweet, tender and has been considered lovely by many fans.

Xiao Fangfang    (Josephine Siao)

She is not only Charlie's leading lady, but also his ex-wife.

She became a star since childhood.  A talented and respectable actress in HK, who won many awards for her acting and have many fans.

Hu Yinmeng

She is a beautiful, talented and highly educated woman.  Her debut is "The Life God" (Yun Shen Bu Zhi Chu) which made her famous.  She earned the best supporting actress in Golden Horse Award for "Ren Zai Tian Ya" costarring Charlie.  She Got married with the famous writer Li Ao and quickly got divorced.  Besides her movie career, she also wrote many books and articles.

Zhang Aijia  (Sylvia Chang)

A talented woman, DJ, singer, actress, and director.   In her early years, she was frequently paired up with Liu Wenzheng, the famous TW singer.  They made a cute couple on screen.  She acts well, sings well and directs well.  Many actresses in her age quitted showbiz long ago, she is one of the few who takes movie as her profession and still keeps active.  Her recent work got critically acclaimed and won her many awards.

Tian Niu

She is a vivacious girl, always happy and full of spirit.  She won a Golden Horse Award for her performance in "The Diary of Di-Di".  I really enjoy her acting, although I haven't seen a lot of her movies.

Hu Huizhong

The movie "Huan Yan" (literal, A Joyful Face)  in 1979 made her an instant star.  Many critics thought she could possibly take over Brigitte's status and become the next superstar in TW romance movies.  Unfortunately the genre of romance movies was going downhill in 1982 and Hu Huizhong was never a next Brigitte.  She later made many action movies in HK.  If they hadn't constantly compared her to Brigitte, I could have liked her more.

Zhou Danwei

She made a few movies with Charlie.  Recently she and Charlie presented in the Golden Horse Award together.
