The Giant Redeye is the largest
Hesperiid in Singapore. It is very rare and has so far been observed
only within the Central Catchment Nature Reserves. The wings are
deep brown above with pale yellow spots on the forewing. The paler
underside, shown in the photo, has pale bluish scaling in the apical area
of the forewing and hindwing, where it forms three or four obscure transverse
bands.
It is a very shy butterfly and
is rather alert and difficult to capture. It normally stops in well-shaded
localities with wings folded upright as in the photo.
The caterpillar is known to
feed on the banana (Musa spp.) and Bertam Palm (Eugeissona tristis). |
