The
Chocolate Royal is rather uncommon in Singapore, and appears to be confined
to certain areas within the nature reserves. We have observed the
butterfly ovipositing on an Ixora bush. The egg is lime green.
The male of the species is a deep lustrous purple above, not unlike the
Arhopala species, whilst the female is paler. The undersurface
of the butterfly is dark brown, with narrow darker brown post discal lines on
both wings. Two prominent black tornal spots on the hindwing are
crowned with brilliant metallic green scaling. The butterfly has
two pairs of white-tipped tails, originating from veins 1b and 2 on the
hindwings. |
