Morphology |
The body of a spider is divided into two parts which are joined by a narrow stalk called the pedicel. The front part, called the cephalothorax (or prossoma), is enclosed whit in a relatively hard and unyielding chitinous shell (carapace above and sternum under). The hind part, called the abdomen (or opisthosoma) is soft and capable of expansion, as happens with feeding or egg development. The length of spiders is measured from the front of the cephalothorax to the hind end of the abdomen.
Next are presented several schemes with the names of each part of a spider's body.
