RAF Upwood

In Between Ramsey and Upwood lies "Upwood Airfield". At the bottom of this page you will find a map. The location of the airfield is shown by the "GREEN" arrow at the bottom right of the map. During Englands war years this airfield played a very important role. It was a prime runway for planes such as Lancaster Bombers, Blenheim Bombers & Supermarine Spitfires. The two pictures below shows what is left of the aeroplane hangers today.

Today much of the old airfield is no more, this is for several reasons, the main reason for this though is the land which was taken from the farmers to build the airfield during the war has been returned to the owners & many of the farmers have decided to plough the runways back into the land for agricultural farming land.

Although all evidence is obviously not proven, it has also been said by several reliable sources that ghosts have been sighted at various locations across the airfield, wearing Bomber/Flying Jackets.

Several places in Ramsey have been named after things from the airfield. For example there is Blenheim road obviously named after a bomber, marked on the map in "RED". There is also a place named "Lancaster Hill", this is shown by the "BLUE" square on the map. This mound in the land is called Lancaster Hill because years ago a Lancaster bomber crashed on this site and the engine from the bomber remains buried in the mound to this day.
