Captain Marvel Giant size Special 1 Review |
Captain Marvel(now Photon) and Moonstone have history. They were main opponents during the Avengers Under Seige saga. The result was Moonstone getting a broken neck, well this issue has them meeting again. The story begins with Monica at sea battling a huge sea monster. She starts to unload from her diverse light aresenal then discovers she has lost control...she can't stop... through and act of will she stops... |
She stops only to discover her flesh is gone...consumed by the energy beams...and then all her suffering is at an end and she dies... actually she wakes up! You see Monica had lost here powers earlier in Marvel timeline(Avengers 293) and this story is a look at her life after that. She has gotten a job as a Captain of a cargo ship. After a few pages of social interaction with members of her crew the action heats up as one of her excop friends is talking with her and gets shot in the back. 2 Portuguese thugs are to blame and take Monica captive. |
After a brief deliberation as to whether to go on the offensive...well you see what she decided. She then gets into uniform, hoping her rep as a hero will be enough for her to take control of the situation as her ship has been taken over... a muscle bound "baddie" named Powderkeg is there to meet the one time Avenger. Even without her powers Monica takes him out in a clever way. Then Powerkeg sets off an explosion and Captain Marvel gets everyone off the ship safely... she goes back to get him, but he is looking for a certain package... then she suddenly gets her powers back... she can fly etc again, but she is solid while doing so, a change from before. She then takes Powederkeg out again... |
She then runs off to visit Reed Richards and gets some tests done to see what her abilities are now. Then she is off to visit her boss Ron Morgan, she arrives to see Ron has been roughed up. Finally she gets the true story that he had found some circuitry that had some amazing capabilities, a woman named Kristina Ramos wanted it and would pay for Ron's shipping company in exchange for the circuit...Ron then discovered she was a crime lord and he wanted out of the deal. She then sank one of his ships(Monica's) and came and had him roughed up. A superpowered woman then took the circuits. |
Captain Marvel zooms off to Brazil to intercept the circuits. There she runs into Karla Sofen in civies. Karla then transforms into Moonstone and takes off flying... |
They engage in battle and Moonstone gets the upper hand and takes Captain Marvel down. It becomes very physical and is a great few pages of fight scenes with Moonstone using various stategies to get her licks in. She then gets Marvel in a choke hold and just before she passes out she flips Moonstone into a plane, stunning her. |
Then with a left hook Moonstone is out. Captain Marvel goes to retrieve the circuits only to see that Ramos, in a now juiced up Guardsman armor is there and the battle begins... |
Unbeknownst to Monica, Ron had called Stark Enterprises to tell them about the curcuit and Jim Rhodes was in transit with a Negator pack (ala Iron Man's Armor Wars saga). During the battle he is able to get that to Monica...she is able to slap it on the armor... Ramos is out and Captain Marvel is back in business. |
This is a good back issue and another good appearance with Moonstone. We see Moonstone put on a heck of a battle, really give it to her oppponent, the fight scenes are well drawn and exciting. They also showcase her powers, the strategies, and smarts that we know she has. But like in Avengers Unplugged she gets taken out with a single blow, that bugs me, it isn't "realistic".. The art work is quite nice all the characters look good, Moonstone is well drawn and portrayed(besides the noted exception). Another layer is added to the Moonstone/Photon relationship and hopefully down the road this can be looked at again...there is a good chemistry with these characters. |
