Fantastic Four Annual 23 Review |
This story appeared in the FF annual but wasn't connected to the main story It was by James Brock Jr, and Mark Mc Kenna. It takes place after Avengers Under Seige as Karla is shown in the hospital and is after the Secret Wars. |
Then once there something amazing happened...people in the hospital are suddenly healed...Doom senses the power and later comes to know it did come from Volcana, due to her guilt over her friend getting hurt...she did indeed have access to the Molecule Man's power, she just never knew it. |
Doom is trying to find out what has happened to the Molecule Man's power and if in fact Volcana, who originally got her power from Doom, has access to it, so he is monitoring her and evaluating things to see...The story picks up as Volcana has had a brief scrap with the Wizard and has done some property damage in the process. A cop on the scene tells her a woman was hurt in the battle and she thinks it is her friend so she wants to go to the hospital to check it out, but is unable in her volcanic form, the Cop has a suggestion...a gas mask to conceal her identity...so they head off to the hospital... |
Moonstone is shown at that hospital, paralysed and under guard, but when the "power" swept over the hospital it healed her also. She mistakenly believes it is the power of the moonstone, but regardless is overjoyed with being able to move again. She assaults some of the guards then breaks out... |
It is now time for Moonstone versus Volcana, who suddenly finds out she can change to rock hard as well as her volcanic state..again a gift from her onetime lover, Molecule Man. During the battle Volcana manages to grab Moonstone and attempts to slam her through some vehicles, Karla phases through it unharmed and takes the battle to her, ending up in a construction yard. |
Volcana hits Moonstone with a pile of bricks and mortar bringing Karla down to the ground slightly dazed... |
Moonstone then blinds Volcana with a light blast. She considers leaving the fight since she still isn't at full form, but then knowing Volcana is helpless she decides to carry on the attack. Doom is commentating and says Moonstone would have won easily except her light powers weren't up to full power so Volcana is able to see sooner than expected and tears the shovel off a bulldozer and whacks an incoming Moonstone with it, taking her out, she then binds Moonstone in chains and leaves her for the authorities( a pic of that is in the Gallery under captured Karla). Volcana takes off back to the hospital to check on her friend. Meanwhile Doom plans how he will use this info about Volcana to help him get the Molecule Man's power. |
This issue is nice in that as far as Moonstone is concerned it is a stand alone story and explains how she recovered from the incident where her neck was broken when she was fleeing from Captain Marvel(now Photon) during the Under Seige storyline. The art work is good and the story is true to Moonstone's character, although not a lot of emphasis is put on it, it is evidenced, like when she considers fleeing, then that is out weighed by the desire to kick butt because she is in the postion to do so...very true to her character. It was an interesting match up... in a regular setting I can't see Volcana getting more than a lucky shot in...but it was interesting to see a different type of person for Moonstone to battle with.. |
