Clan Destine
First Appearance: ClanDestine #1 (October 1994).
Appearances: ClanDestine #1-12, X-Men/ClanDestine.
Years Active: 1189 C.E.-present.
The Clan Destine are a family of immortals. The patriarch of the clan
is Adam Destine. He rescued a genie from captivity, and the pair ended
up falling in love and marrying. Their children were born with various
superpowers and extended lifespans, the former courtesy of their mother,
the genie, and the latter courtesy of the genie's gift to their father.
The exact number of the Destine family is unknown, but probably number
in the dozens, at least. They have been around, and semi-active, for centuries.
One of their actions in the recent, pre-Fantastic Four #1 past was
an encounter with Charles
Xavier. In the modern era a villain began killing Destine
family members, causing them to come together to defeat the villain.
Their members include:
-
Adam Destine, an English Crusader and
knight born in 1168. As a teenager he fell on a scythe; a genie visited
him in a vision and helped him recover, granting him extended life. In
1189, while fighting in the First Crusade, Adam encountered an evil sorcerer
who was keeping the genie hostage. Adam killed the sorcerer and freed the
genie. They married, and she bore him many children, all with the extended
lifespan that she'd granted Adam. In 1612 Adam helped establish the Romanov
dynasty in Russia. In 1615, on his way to rendezvous with Albert
and Gracie in Japan, he was attacked
by alien lifeforms, who on finding that they could not harm him grew frightened
and left Earth. When his son Vincent went "evil," approximately eleven
years prior to ClanDestine #1, Adam slew him, thus dividing the
family. Adam took a psychedelic van into space and remained there until
the events of ClanDestine #1. Adam is completely indestructible
and immortal, as well as being a skilled fighter.
-
Kay, the first-born of Adam's children, is nicknamed "Cuckoo" for
her ability to take over the bodies of various people when she "dies."
In 1519 Kay, in the body of a Spanish nobleman, joined Cortez's conquistadors,
taking Gracie with her, but the pair turned against Cortez when
the conquistadors attacked the Aztecs. (Kay would appear to have been particularly
clueless about the conquistadors' intentions.) She has occupied a wide
range of races and sexes over the years. In addition to a greatly extended
lifespan she has a variety of mental powers, including telepathy, mind
control, and astral projection.
-
Samantha, who at the time of the family portrait in 1963 was a young
girl. She has the power to create weapons and armor out of a protoplasmic
metal using only her thoughts.
-
Walter. In 1839 he used his superstrength to dig Maurice
out of a landslide. In 1904 he wrestled a Kodiak grizzly bear. In 1944
Walter was with Allied military intelligence and had an encounter with
a Nazi machine; the Invaders
confronted the machine, but it was prepared for them and temporarily halted
them. Walter attacked it, and the machine was destroyed, but the other
soldiers, on seeng Walter's inhuman form, attacked him. Walter has the
power to grow in size and strength to a seemingly limitless degree.
-
Rory and Pandora, who are in their teens. Rory can control
gravity for flight, energy fields and superstrength. Pandora can fire laser
beams.
-
Dominic. He has extremely super-developed senses, to an uncanny
degree.
-
Newton. He has the ability to invent and build things of extremely
advanced technology.
-
Gracie. She was born in 1503. In 1519, disguised as a teenage boy,
she accompanied Kay on a trip to Mexico with the Spanish conquistadors,
but sided with the Aztecs when the conquistadors revealed their greed.
In 1615 she was in Japan with Albert helping to protect the Tokugawa
Shogunate from a coup. She has various psychic powers.
-
Maurice. In 1839 he was somehow buried in a landslide and required
Walter's
help to extricate himself. He was killed during the events of the miniseries.
He had the power to project energy beams.
-
Albert. In 1615 he was with Gracie in Japan, protecting the
Tokugawa Shogunate from a coup attempt. He has mental powers, including
precognition and astral projection, and can heal at an accelerated rate.
-
Florence. She was killed during the events of the miniseries. She
had precognitive abilities.
-
Vincent. All that is known of him is that he turned "evil" at one
point, that Adam killed him, and that this event tore the family
apart.
William. He has highly developed physical abilities.
